Subject: An appeal to provide humanitarian shelter to 35 unfortunate Rohingyas who were arrested by Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) on September 29, 2008
Your Excellency,
On behalf of the Union of Rohingya Communities in Europe(URCE), we wish you success to bring about lasting peace, prosperity and progress to the people of India, the largest democracy in the world, under your sagacious leadership.
Today, we would like to draw your kind attention to the case of arrest of 35 unfortunate Rohingyas on September 29, 2008 on the Indo-Pak border. They were arrested by the Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) when they were trying to
Police said that they arrived India from Bangladesh illegally and reached Punjab to cross over to Pakistan. All were arrested when they were trying to cross the barbed fencing at border village Bikhiwind. Police also said that none of them were possessing passport or any valid documents which were required at the time of crossing of international border.
Your Excellency!
You are aware of the fact that the Rohingya ethnic minority of Arakan of Burma, is one of the most oppressed and downtrodden people of the world. During the last 46 years of military rule, they have been subjected to the worst violation of human rights through political oppression, economic exploitation and cultural slavery. Genocidal operations have been conducted again and again against them by the military regime. The military regime has been systematically pursuing a policy to turn Arakan into a Rohinyaless land. And through an amendment to the country's citizenship law, the military regime has made them stateless in their ancestral land Arakan where they have been living centuries after centuries.
I am personally a member of one of the most distressed Rohingya families. My father U Kyaw Min is a Rohingya parliamentarian and also a member of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's CRPP (Committee Representing People's Parliament). But my father was sentenced to 47 years imprisonment on the charge of being a foreigner and at the same time my mother Daw Tiza, my two sister Khin Khin Nu and Way Way Nu and my one brother Maung Aung were also imprisoned for 17 years respectively. Now they are all passing a nightmarish life in prison in Burma.
Your Excellency!
In order to escape desperate condition inside Arakan, the Rohingyas are sneaking daily in to neighboring country Bangladesh risking an uncertain life of hunger and homelessness. Many of them have been trying to escape to other countries like Thailand and Malaysia by boat where many of them have perished in the ocean. Only a few of the incidents of the tragedies of the Rohingyas drowning in the ocean have come to the notice of the world press, but most of the cases have slipped away unnoticed by the world.
It may also be mentioned here that, at present there are thousands of Rohingyas who have been passing a miserable life in different parts of Cox's Bazar district of Bangladesh. Hunger and diseases have been pushing every day the Rohingyas to death. On June 07 and 8, 2008, eighteen Rohingya children died within these 2 days in Ukhiya of Cox's Bazar, the southern district of Bangladesh due to hunger and diseases, where about 1000 Rohingya families with about 100,000 members from different places of Bangladesh and new intruders from Arakan State of Burma were gathered at east-south Koto-Palong Rohingya refugee camps and in areas adjacent to Ukhiya TV relay center and they are living under open sky. They are passing their days without shelter, adequate food and medical treatment. The Rohingyas particularly their children are suffering from various diseases causing death almost every day due to the lack of medical treatment and adequate food.
However, in order to escape such as a serious situation of life and death, those unfortunate Rohingyas have tried to cross to Pakistan via India through the land route hoping that other Rohingyas living in Pakistan may provide them some assistance of shelter and food. But unfortunately, their fate dragged them to the prison.
Under the above circumstances, we fervently appeal to Your Excellency to kindly involve your Good Office to get release of those hapless Rohingyas and provide them humanitarian shelter.
Finally, we would like to conclude by expressing our best wishes for the good health of Your Excellency as well as for your personal well-being and success.
With thanks and best regards.
