MA SU AND HER STORY
Ma Su is an eighteen year old girl that grew up in Kyaikhto in the Mon state of Burma. Her parents were no longer living, so she lived with her grandparents, also helping them care for her younger brother and sister. She also helped support the family by doing odd jobs around the town. Because of the challenge of making a living, she left home in search of a better life in Thailand as an illegal worker. Ma Su left for the border town of Mae Sot, Thailand, ten months ago.
In Mae Sot, Ma Su was sold as a housemaid for 7,000 Baht ($175) by human traffickers. After working as a housekeeper for 7 months, she was sold for the same amount to a businessman in Lopburi, 150 kilometers away from Bangkok.
Ma Su's life unexpectedly turned upside down at midnight [July, 2002] after working as a housemaid with the new employer for three months. The employer accused Ma Su of stealing some basic households that were missing. When Ma Su denied stealing those things, they beat and kicked her. Ma Su described what happened by saying:
"Money was missing. A telephone was missing. Two bottles of alcohol were missing. I do not drink. But they accused me. ... ... [They said] if you did not take them, who did? You were the only one there. Thieves used to come to the house even when I was not there. ... I took out my clothes and other things. I showed them everything I had. I was beaten severely. The daughter beat me. The grandfather beat me. All of them beat me. There were 6 people in the house. All of them beat me together. I was tortured to the extreme."
This was not the end of Ma Su's misfortune. After being beaten severely, the homeowner took Ma Su outside and burned her alive.
I was beaten until [they were] satisfied. [Then] two of them burned me. I was taken outside away from the house and burned. It was very cruel. They gave me several kinds of beatings. The beat me everywhere, all over my legs and all over my hands even. They put out the fire after an hour. Then they took me home. They beat me again at home until night fell. I could not even speak. I was in great pain.
The family beat and tortured Ma Su for three more days, then put her in a car and told her they were going to take her back to Mae Sot. They actually took her to a site in Uthaithani, 220 kilometers away from Bangkok, beat her until they believed she was dead, and left her near a bush beside the road.
Luckily, a local resident found her at 1 A.M. on July 7th and sent her to the emergency ward of Uthaithani hospital. Thai authorities began investigating how Ma Su came to be in her condition.
The head of the Migrant Department of the Federation of Trade Unions of Burma, went to see Ma Su to provide her with assistance.
Ma Su had a private room in the ICU emergency department. I noticed that her face was swollen from the beatings. Her upper lip was torn to pieces. Some of her teeth were missing and some were hanging loose. It was painful for her to speak. She was bandaged from her chest to her feet. Then she was connected to several plastic tubes. The lawyer from Forum Asia and I explained to Ma Su that we had come to provide her with support. Her face and eyes lit up when she heard that. Ma Su's ability to think and to hear seemed sharp despite the severe beatings.
After being with Ma Su for over an hour, the lawyer from Forum Asia and FTUB representatives told hospital staff that we were there on Ma Su's behalf and would attend to her affairs.
Hospital authorities told the media that more than 50 percent of Ma Su's body was burnt and that she needed skin grafts. They also said that Thai police has been investigating her case. When asked by a reporter , they said that the embassy of the Burmese military government had not contacted the hospital and had not provided Ma Su with any assistance.
Ma Su said that when she recovered, she would like to tell her attackers that she did not steal from them. She said she prayed for better lives in the future. She said that she wanted to donate gold leaves to a pagoda and pray for the family of the homeowner who tortured her. She said she would pray for them to be able to avoid such incidents.
I would like to them face to face that I did not steal their things. I want to donate to the temple on their behalf . I also want to donate to the temple and pray that my family will get enough to eat. I want to offer gold leaves [at a pagoda].
The Migrant Department of Federation of Trade Unions-Burma is going to fulfill her wishes by offering gold leaves on her behalf at the Watmahahta Monastery in Bangkok on Sunday, July 14,.

MA SU PASSED AWAY
Ma Su passed away on July 17, 2002, from severe burn injuries. This Burmese girl was beaten, burned alive, and left for dead by her employers because she denied taking missing valuables from their home in Lopburi, Thailand.
She was treated as an inpatient at Uthaithani Hospital but was then moved to the Nakornsawan Hospital because she needed skin grafts. She died there on the evening of July 16.
Ma Su said that when she recovered, she wanted to tell her employer that she did not steal their property. She said she prayed for them to have better lives in the future. She said that she wanted to donate gold leaves to a pagoda and pray for her employers in order to avoid future tragic incidents.
According to her wishes, the Migrant Department of FTUB offered gold leaves at the Watmahahta Monastery in Bangkok on Sunday, July 16th. Christian ministers in Bangkok also held prayer services for Ma Su.
What will become of Ma Su's remains is still unknown . NGO's such as Forum Asia and the Migrant Department of FTUB provided support to Ma Su in the hospital and are helping set up memorial services for her .
